The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) is encouraging its members and partners to attend the 2026 AFL-CIO Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Civil & Human Rights Conference, scheduled for January 15-18, 2026, in Baltimore.

The conference theme, “Honoring Our History – Fighting for Our Future,” emphasizes the connection between the labor movement and civil rights efforts. Organizers say it aims to draw lessons from history while preparing for ongoing challenges in labor and civil rights.

According to the IAM, “This conference is an important platform for dialogue and action at the intersection of labor rights and civil/human rights. It celebrates Dr. King’s enduring legacy while setting a course for collective strength in 2026.”

Attendees will participate in discussions on current issues such as collective bargaining rights, threats to democracy, voting rights, and economic justice. The event will also feature workshops designed to provide practical tools for organizing within communities and workplaces.

“Workshops and breakout sessions will provide attendees with hands-on tools and best practices to empower them to organize in their communities and workplaces. Whether you’re a rank-and-file member or a union leader, this is an opportunity to sharpen skills, build alliances, and leave ready to drive change,” according to organizers.

Alex Rias was recently named Director of Civil, Human, and Women’s Rights at AFL-CIO. He will oversee this year’s conference programming.

The event will take place at the Hilton Baltimore Inner Harbor. Organizers recommend early hotel reservations due to limited availability on January 14th; the negotiated room rate is $219 per night.

Conference activities are set to begin on Thursday afternoon, January 15.
