The U.S. Census Bureau will begin an embargo for the 2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year estimates on September 9, 2025, at 10 a.m. ET. The public release of these statistics is scheduled for September 11.

The ACS collects data on a variety of topics about people and housing in the United States. These include language spoken at home, education levels, commuting patterns, employment status, mortgage and rent details, income, poverty rates, and health insurance coverage. According to the Census Bureau, “It is the only source of local estimates for most of the 40-plus topics it covers.”

Embargoed access will be provided to subscribers starting September 9 at 10 a.m. ET. The embargo covers all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, all congressional districts and metropolitan statistical areas, as well as other geographic regions with populations over 65,000.

The embargo period will last until Thursday, September 11 at 12:01 a.m. ET. During this time, wire and distribution services are not allowed to distribute news stories or data files before the official public release date and time. The Census Bureau has stated that “Wire and distribution services are prohibited from distributing embargoed news stories and data files before the public release date and time.” Additional information can be found in the Census Bureau’s embargo policy.

All ACS data products—including those on data.census.gov as well as API resources—will be available to everyone by September 11 at 10 a.m. ET.

Those interested in registering for embargo access can do so by visiting https://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/embargoed_releases.
