Approximately 56 employees at Discovery World, a science museum in Milwaukee, have voted to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM Union). The vote follows a campaign by workers seeking better pay, clearer career advancement opportunities, and a stronger voice in workplace decisions.

IAM Midwest Territory Special Representative Adante Balke commented on the outcome: “Congratulations to the Discovery World workers on making their voices heard and officially winning their union election. These dedicated employees are coming together to demand respect, fair wages, better benefits, and greater transparency in promotions and hiring. By standing united, they are now preparing to bargain collectively for a stronger future.”

The next step for the newly unionized group is to negotiate their first contract. Their goals include improving wages and benefits, expanding career growth options, and ensuring that workplace concerns can be raised without fear of retaliation. Through collective bargaining, they will have formal representation in discussions about employment conditions.

During the organizing effort, some workers expressed concerns regarding management’s response. Allegations included anti-union tactics intended to discourage unionization efforts as well as the firing of an employee who supported the union drive.

Discovery World staff play a central role in supporting the museum’s educational programs and events. Their work helps provide interactive experiences for families and visitors throughout Milwaukee.

IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli stated: “The IAM Union is proud to welcome these workers into the IAM family. We would like to give special thanks to Milwaukee Common Council Members Alderman Alex Brower, Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic, Alderperson JoCasta Zamarripa, and Alderman Robert J. Bauman for standing in solidarity with Discovery World workers and supporting their right to organize. We stand ready to support them as they move toward a strong first contract that reflects their value, protects their rights, and ensures Discovery World remains a place where workers and the community can thrive together.”

The IAM Union represents around 600,000 active and retired members across various industries such as aerospace, defense, airlines, shipbuilding, railroads, transit systems, healthcare services, automotive sectors throughout North America.
