As Winter Storm Fern affects areas within Duke Energy’s Indiana service region, the Duke Energy Foundation has announced $55,000 in rapid response grants to 21 nonprofits and community agencies. The funding is intended to support local efforts to address urgent needs such as warming shelters, emergency supplies, and blankets for residents facing severe weather conditions.
Stan Pinegar, president of Duke Energy Indiana, stated: “While our crews work out in the field, we want to make sure our fellow first responders and community support systems are also cared for. We’re glad to be able to support organizations across the state that are doing great work for Indiana’s communities every day, and particularly during this storm.”
The grants will be distributed among organizations throughout various counties in Indiana. Recipients include county emergency management agencies, local YMCAs, United Way chapters, city governments, homeless coalitions, and other nonprofit groups. Each organization will receive either $2,500 or $5,000 depending on their needs and capacity.
Residents can access open shelters and disaster relief services using the American Red Cross Emergency app. This app provides emergency checklists, shelter maps, and weather alert monitoring tools; it is sponsored by the Duke Energy Foundation.
The Duke Energy Foundation contributes over $30 million annually in philanthropic aid within communities served by Duke Energy customers. The foundation is funded through shareholder contributions.
Duke Energy Indiana serves about 920,000 customers with approximately 6,300 megawatts of electric capacity across a 23,000-square-mile area. This makes it the largest electric supplier in Indiana.
