Prolonged cold weather in the Carolinas has led to a noticeable increase in home energy use, according to Duke Energy. The region is currently experiencing several days of temperatures at or below freezing, which is 10 to 20 degrees lower than usual for this time of year. This stretch could be the longest period of cold since January 2018, and snow accumulation is also possible.

Duke Energy says that extended low temperatures cause heating systems to operate longer, resulting in higher energy bills for customers. To help manage these increased costs, the company is offering practical advice and flexible billing options.

Customers are encouraged to take steps such as setting thermostats to the lowest comfortable setting, sealing leaks and adding insulation, using sunlight during the day by opening blinds and curtains, and running ceiling fans clockwise to circulate warm air.

Duke Energy also highlights its Smart Thermostat Rewards program: “Get $150 through an initial bill credit and $50 annually after that when you enroll a qualifying smart thermostat in Power Manager/EnergyWise Home. Participants agree to brief adjustments to their thermostat temperature, no more than 4 degrees, typically for one to two hours during periods of peak electricity demand.”

The Flex Savings Option allows customers to reduce costs by shifting some energy use away from peak times.

To provide further flexibility, Duke Energy offers payment programs such as Pick Your Due Date—which lets customers select their monthly bill due date—due date extensions for those unable to pay on time, and installment plans for past-due balances.

For those needing additional support, resources include a Payment Assistance Finder connecting customers with local organizations that offer utility bill assistance. The Share the Light Fund combines community and company contributions to help eligible customers cover their bills. Customers can also call 211 for access to more community resources.

Duke Energy serves millions of electric and natural gas customers across several states including North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. The company continues investing in grid upgrades and cleaner generation sources while focusing on customer reliability during its transition toward a smarter energy future.
