Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that the state will participate in the Federal Education Freedom Tax Credit program, which was created through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The initiative is intended to support and expand school choice for K-12 students in Florida.
“Florida families have access to the nation’s top ranked and largest school choice program. About 1.4 million students are enrolled in school choice options in Florida—more than most other states’ entire K-12 school population,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “The new federal school choice program will allow Florida families to supplement their existing scholarships.”
The Federal Education Freedom Tax Credit, set to begin on January 1, 2027, allows Florida taxpayers to receive a tax credit of up to $1,700 per year when they contribute to a program assisting K-12 students with educational expenses. By joining this federal program, Florida aims to give residents more opportunities to choose educational settings that fit their needs.
In recent years, Florida has implemented universal school choice policies, making it possible for every family in the state to access various education options such as private schools, charter schools, virtual learning environments, or homeschooling. Nearly half of all students in Florida are currently enrolled in some form of school choice.
Several organizations have recognized Florida’s efforts in expanding education freedom and parental empowerment. The Heritage Foundation has ranked Florida first nationally for education freedom for four consecutive years. The state also holds top rankings from other groups like ALEC and the Center for Education Reform for areas including student-centered funding programs and parent involvement.
