Florida has been ranked as the top state for education freedom for the third year in a row, according to the ALEC Index of State Education Freedom: A 50 State Guide to Parental Empowerment. The announcement was made by Commissioner of Education Anastasios Kamoutsas on January 21, 2026.

The state received an A+ rating and was also recognized as number one in categories such as student-centered funding programs, charter schools, and home schooling. Florida is the only state to achieve this highest distinction in this year’s rankings.

Commissioner Kamoutsas stated, “Florida’s continued recognition as number one in Education Freedom reflects Governor Ron DeSantis’ leadership and unwavering commitment to putting students and families first. Florida leads the nation because we provide all students and families with access to high-quality school choice options that meet their individual needs.”

The ALEC Index evaluates all 50 states on various aspects of educational opportunity, including freedom programs, charter schools, homeschooling, virtual schooling, and open enrollment policies. Florida’s ranking highlights its focus on providing families with choices across different learning environments.

In addition to its ranking by ALEC, Florida has also secured top positions from other organizations. The Heritage Foundation named it number one for education freedom. Lightcast placed Florida first for talent attraction and developing a skilled workforce. The Center for Education Reform ranked it first on its Parent Power! Index, while EdChoice gave Florida the top spot on its Friedman Index.
