The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) is urging residents to practice safe digging on National Safe Digging Day, also known as 811 Day, observed on August 11. The day serves as a reminder for Floridians to take precautions before starting any digging projects, whether for home improvement or landscaping.
PSC Chairman Mike La Rosa emphasized the potential dangers of striking underground utility lines. “Striking underground utility lines can lead to costly fines, serious injuries, unplanned expenses, and significant delays,” said La Rosa. “To avoid these risks, we strongly encourage all Floridians to call 8-1-1 at least two business days before starting any digging project.”
In Florida, calling 811 connects residents to Sunshine 811. This service coordinates with local utility companies to send professionals who mark the locations of underground lines at the work site using flags or paint. This process helps prevent accidents and damage related to excavation.
National Safe Digging Day is part of a nationwide initiative led by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA). The campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of calling 8-1-1 before beginning any type of excavation.
