IAM District 6 has expanded its support for homeless veterans in Des Moines by making the annual Stand Down event an official part of its District HELPS program. This year, locals across the district contributed funds that were matched by District 6, raising a total of $1,150 along with donated supplies. The organization noted that $750 can provide 500 meals for those in need.

Thirteen members from three IAM Locals volunteered at the event, with some traveling over three hours to participate. Their roles included helping with registration, food service, security, cleanup, and water delivery for hundreds of volunteers at the site. The event served more than 500 people, about half of whom were veterans and half civilians.

Sam Cicinelli, IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President, said: “Our veterans deserve more than gratitude, they deserve action. I’m proud of the IAM members in District 6 who stepped up to honor their service by ensuring they and their families receive the support they need.”

The IAM members joined other volunteers to provide care, meals, and essential services to veterans and their families. District 6 is encouraging all IAM districts and locals to support Homeless Veterans Stand Down events in their communities.
