Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) District 776 organized their third annual Homeless Drive on March 24, coming together to provide food and essential resources to people experiencing homelessness in Fort Worth.
The event highlights the ongoing commitment of IAM District 776 members to community service, even as many prepare for upcoming contract negotiations. The drive also received support from Taylor Rehmet, a District 776 member who now serves as a Texas State Senator.
The Homeless Drive is designed to unite union members and local residents in donating and distributing items needed by those less fortunate. According to organizers, it aims to foster compassion while addressing critical needs within the community. “Our retired President Paul Black shared something with me during his retirement party that I carry with me always: Never forget where you come from,” said District 776 Business Representative Eric Meriwether. “I’ve always lived by that, and it guides everything I do for our members and our community.”
Organizers say that while IAM has long been involved in community services both on and off the job, local districts like District 776 play a key role in maintaining relationships with communities during times of need.
To mark another successful year for the event, participants gathered for classic Texas barbecue and looked forward to continuing their efforts next year.
