IAM Union General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes and Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen visited the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center (W3) to engage with members participating in organizing and young worker classes. The visit was part of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers’ (IAM) ongoing efforts to support education, organizing, and leadership development within the union.
During their time at W3, Cervantes and Johnsen participated in Organizing I classes offered in both Spanish and English, as well as the Young Workers Leadership Program. She stated that it is important for all members to have access to tools needed for leadership roles. “Her visit amplified the IAM’s ongoing commitment to inclusion, education, and empowering members at every level of the union,” according to a statement from IAM.
Richie Johnsen met with organizers and young workers during his visit. He acknowledged their dedication, especially given the timing close to the holidays. “IAM Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen met with organizers and young workers, praising their dedication and enthusiasm, so close to the holidays,” said IAM.
Participants in the Young Workers program expressed that having union leaders visit reinforced their importance within the labor movement. They felt that such engagement affirmed their place at decision-making tables. “Young Workers participants said the visit reinforced their role within the labor movement and affirmed that they have a seat at the table,” noted IAM.
The event underscores IAM’s focus on fostering leadership among its diverse membership through inclusive educational opportunities.
