IAM Union members from across Washington state gathered at the State Capitol in Olympia to advocate for legislation supporting working families, according to a March 10 announcement. The event was led by Steve Miller, President of the Washington State Council and Directing Business Representative of IAM District 160.
The advocacy day focused on urging lawmakers to prioritize policies that protect union jobs and address issues such as affordable childcare, rising costs, and inefficiencies in unemployment benefits. These efforts reflect ongoing concerns among workers about economic pressures and access to essential services.
Robert “Bobby” Martinez, IAM Union Western Territory General Vice President, said, “The IAM Union Washington State Council once again demonstrated what solidarity in action looks like. Our members showed up in Olympia with a clear message for lawmakers: working families must remain the top priority in Washington.” Martinez added that the group’s advocacy included highlighting challenges faced by working families.
Miller praised the delegates’ commitment during their meetings with legislators. “I am proud of the dedication and professionalism our delegates brought to every conversation in the Capitol. When we sit down with lawmakers, we bring the real-life experiences of Washington’s workforce: aerospace workers, healthcare professionals, public employees, and more,” Miller said. He emphasized that their efforts aim to support all working people in the state and hold elected officials accountable.
The meeting also featured insights from several labor leaders as part of an ongoing effort by the Washington State Council of Machinists to defend workers’ rights through direct legislative engagement.
The council continues its work as a strong advocate for labor interests throughout Washington.
