The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) has announced that registration is open for its upcoming Spanish Leadership I Class, scheduled for April 19-24, 2025. The course will take place at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center and is available to all IAM members and staff.

IAM encourages interested members to contact their Local President, Business Representative, or General Chair as soon as possible to secure a spot in the program. While fluency in Spanish is not mandatory, some understanding of the language is considered beneficial.

All classroom instruction, books, and materials are provided in Spanish. The curriculum follows the same structure as the English-language leadership programs but focuses on developing leadership skills while strengthening connections with Spanish-speaking members and communities.

According to IAM, “As our membership continues to grow and diversify, the IAM’s Spanish Leadership I Class encourages members to step up and take on greater leadership roles – building the confidence and skills needed to better represent, advocate for, and stand alongside every member on the job.”

The Spanish-language programs at the Winpisinger Center are coordinated by the Spanish Language Working Group (SLWG), made up of IAM staff and members. These programs cover topics such as labor history, parliamentary procedure in local administration, steward responsibilities, human rights issues, organizing strategies, government functions, and politics.

Since its inception, “the Spanish Leadership Program has been founded in inclusivity. It creates a welcoming space for members who may face language barriers, while also encouraging participants who simply have the desire to engage and stand in solidarity with our siblings whose primary language is Spanish,” according to IAM.

Openings remain available for all levels of Spanish Leadership programs. Participation does not count against a Local’s regular allotment for leadership school attendance.

Important dates for upcoming sessions include:
– Spanish Leadership I: April 19-24
– Spanish Leadership II: July 26-31
– Advanced Spanish Leadership: November 15-20

IAM states that it remains committed to providing comprehensive education and leadership development opportunities in multiple languages—English, Spanish, and French—to ensure access for all workers within its membership.
