Representatives from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) recently gathered at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center to prepare for contract negotiations with GE Appliances. The Joint Bargaining Committee (JBC), which also includes members from UA and UE, represents unionized service technicians working nationwide.
The preparation program brought together shop committee members and negotiating representatives for several days of training focused on strategy, research, and coordinated bargaining among multiple unions. The goal was to ensure that JBC unions are unified, well-informed, and prepared to negotiate contracts that reflect their members’ priorities.
During the program, participants reviewed contract language, developed proposals, conducted costing exercises, and planned communications. Emphasis was placed on engaging union members so that negotiation priorities would be aligned with those on the shop floor.
Committees from various locals worked together to identify shared challenges and exchange best practices. Discussions centered on protecting wages and benefits as well as strengthening job security and workplace protections.
“This training gives our negotiating committees the tools and confidence they need to fight for the best possible agreement,” said IAM Union Collective Bargaining Director Craig Norman. “Preparation is power, and when we walk into negotiations, we do so with a clear strategy and the full strength of our membership behind us.”
