As Labor Day approaches, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) has issued a message to its members highlighting the significance of the holiday. The union emphasized that Labor Day is not just another day off, but serves as a reminder of the essential role workers play in society and the ongoing struggle for workplace fairness.

The IAM noted that Labor Day was established by a machinist in 1882, underscoring the organization’s historical connection to the holiday. In an address to members, union leadership reflected on current challenges facing labor rights.

“Our freedom to organize, to stand together, and to advocate for our rights is a hard-won treasure—and it is under attack like few times in our history. It is the foundation upon which we continue to fight for better wages, safe working conditions, and respect on the job. This day is a celebration of our collective strength and resilience, but also a call to action to use our rights and voice to push for the fairness we deserve.”

The statement also recognized IAM members currently engaged in strikes at Boeing Defense in St. Louis and Libbey Glass in Ohio. Union leaders commended their efforts: “I want to acknowledge our members at Boeing Defense in St. Louis, Libbey Glass in Ohio, and all our IAM Family who are currently on strike. Your courage and solidarity exemplify the very spirit of Labor Day. Your fight is about more than individual issues—it’s about securing a better future for all workers, ensuring that we are all treated with respect.”

The message concluded by encouraging members to honor Labor Day through unity and continued advocacy: “Let’s honor this day by reaffirming our commitment to standing together, advocating for justice, and building a future where every worker’s dignity is recognized. Together, we are stronger. Together, we will continue to fight for the dignity and respect every worker deserves.”
