The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Union announced on Mar. 26 the passing of Mary Allen Fones, who served as kitchen supervisor at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center for more than three decades. Fones died on March 15 at age 76.
Fones played a significant role in the daily life of the Winpisinger Center, both through her culinary skills and her ability to bring laughter to her workplace. She was among the first three staff members hired at the center and advanced from cook to kitchen leadperson before becoming supervisor in 1995, a position she held until retiring in 2013.
Her colleagues remembered her for making even busy shifts feel lighter with humor and camaraderie. “Mary’s impact on the Winpinsinger Center is measured by all the laughs and smiles she gave our members and staff over her career,” said IAM Union International President Brian Bryant. “She touched so many of our members’ lives with her lovable personality and cooking skills. Our union is better off for her many years of dedication and we send our deepest condolences to Mary’s loved ones.”
Fones was known for expressing affection through food, enjoying meals with family, trying new dishes, and particularly savoring nachos—one of her favorites.
A lifelong resident of Hollywood, Maryland, Fones also supported numerous community events in southern Maryland, including activities at the local Moose lodge.
Flowers or memorial contributions may be made to the Patuxent Moose Lodge in honor of Mary Fones.
