IAM Union Western Territory General Vice President Robert “Bobby” Martinez recently visited members of IAM Local 1998 in Hawaii. The trip was intended to emphasize the essential contributions of Local 1998 within the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Western Territory and its role in national security.

Local 1998, established in 1951, has a long history of representing workers in Hawaii. Over more than seventy years, it has been a key part of IAM’s presence in the region, supporting stability and growth for the union’s Western Territory. The continued existence of Local 1998 demonstrates an ongoing need for union representation and reflects the commitment of its members to solidarity and collective bargaining.

“Our Hawaiian members play a pivotal role in our union,” remarked GVP Martinez. “Their solidarity through cultural diversity is empowering and the role our members play in the name of national defense is felt from coast to coast.”

Martinez noted that Hawaii’s geographic location gives Local 1998 particular importance both economically and nationally. Members are involved in industries vital to infrastructure and defense, making their work crucial beyond their immediate workplaces. Their efforts support operational readiness for national defense operations.

During his meetings with members and local leaders, Martinez acknowledged the significant responsibility carried by Local 1998 workers. He stated that strong union representation is necessary to protect their rights, secure fair contracts, and maintain safe working conditions so they can continue their roles effectively.

The visit also highlighted the diverse membership of Local 1998, which mirrors Hawaii’s multicultural population. Martinez described this diversity as a strength for both the local chapter and the wider IAM organization: “Their solidarity through cultural diversity is empowering.” He emphasized that unity among people from different backgrounds enhances solidarity within IAM.

Throughout his stay, Martinez engaged with members about their priorities and concerns while reaffirming IAM’s commitment to supporting all locals regardless of distance.
