IAM Union members from across Nebraska recently convened for the bi-annual meeting of the Nebraska State Council, which serves as the political arm of the IAM Union. The gathering aimed to coordinate advocacy efforts, increase member involvement, and prepare for upcoming months ahead of the midterm elections.
Delegates representing Locals 31, 180, 602, 612, 1569, and District 6 discussed legislative priorities and received updates from their respective locals. A key focus was on the significance of the upcoming midterm elections and supporting candidates who back collective bargaining rights, fair wages, and retirement security.
Nebraska State Council President Mike Helmink led the meeting with Secretary-Treasurer Dan Janak. Helmink highlighted the importance of active participation by union members. “Elections have real consequences for our members and their families,” said Helmink. “If we want leaders who stand with working people, we need to stay organized, informed, and active. Political action is how we protect our contracts and our future.”
The attendees also heard from IAM Assistant Political Director Ty Richardson. Richardson gave an overview of national trends related to the midterms and stressed the importance of coordinated grassroots mobilization. In addition, IAM Midwest Territory International Representatives Kevin Murch and Chris Tucker reiterated support for Nebraska’s political activities.
The council meeting underscored that continued political engagement is essential for advancing and defending IAM Union members’ interests as well as those of working families in Nebraska.
