Shalimar Beach Resort will reopen on September 28, 2025, marking three years since Hurricane Ian struck Sanibel Island. The resort was completely destroyed by the hurricane in 2022 and has been rebuilt from the ground up. This makes it the first hotel constructed on Sanibel Island in over four decades.
The rebuilt Shalimar Beach Resort features 33 new accommodations, including private one- and two-bedroom villas with direct Gulf views and hotel studios with partial water views. Amenities include a beachfront saltwater pool heated year-round, a rooftop terrace with sunrise and sunset views, fully equipped kitchens, private screened lanais in every unit, and 360 feet of private white-sand beach. Additional facilities include a community BBQ area and on-site rentals for bikes, paddle boards, and cabanas.
The resort remains a fourth-generation family-owned business. The owners have longstanding ties to Sanibel Island and were married on the property’s beach. Their decision to rebuild was motivated by their desire to preserve the resort for future generations.
“Hurricane Ian tested us in every possible way, but it also clarified our purpose,” says Shalimar’s owner, Sean Niesel. “Shalimar’s rebuild isn’t just about what we lost, but what we’ve gained: strength, perspective, and a renewed commitment to hospitality. As Sanibel Island visitors since 1990, we take great pride in being part of the island’s future for generations to come.”
Reservations for fall 2025 are now open through www.shalimar.com or by calling (239) 472-1353.
