The U.S. Census Bureau released new Business Formation Statistics for March 2026, according to an April 8 announcement. The monthly data provide updated information on new business applications and formations in the United States and Puerto Rico.
These statistics are intended to offer timely insights into economic activity by tracking the number of new businesses being created each month. The dataset is produced through collaboration between the Census Bureau and economists from several institutions, including the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, the University of Maryland, and the University of Notre Dame.
The release includes all twelve series—four related to business applications and eight to formations—on a national, regional, and state level. Additionally, four monthly business application series are published for Puerto Rico as part of this standard product. Both seasonally adjusted and not seasonally adjusted data are made available in each release.
There was no separate news release accompanying this update; it was issued as a tip sheet only.
Looking ahead, regular publication of these statistics will continue to provide policymakers, researchers, and businesses with up-to-date information about trends in business creation across different parts of the country.
