The University of North Florida (UNF) has received an endowment of over $1 million from the River Branch Foundation to support its Institute of Environmental Research and Education (IERE). The funds will be used for scholarships for students in the environmental sciences bachelor’s degree program and to enhance IERE’s programming.

The River Branch Endowed Scholarship is the first scholarship at UNF designated specifically for students pursuing a degree in environmental sciences. Additionally, the River Branch Endowed Excellence Fund aims to address the institute’s most critical needs as it continues to expand.

“This extraordinary gift from the River Branch Foundation opens doors for students who are passionate about environmental science and strengthens the long-term vitality of the IERE,” said Dr. Erin Largo-Wight, professor and IERE director. “It’s a powerful affirmation of our program’s mission to connect education, researchand community engagement in service of a healthier planet. We are deeply grateful for the River Branch Foundation’s vision and generosity and can’t wait to see what our students and faculty will accomplish from this gift.”

The relationship between UNF and the River Branch Foundation dates back nearly two decades. In 2006, a significant endowment from the foundation helped establish IERE. Since then, continued support has enabled projects such as producing and installing Pervious Oyster Shell Habitat (POSH) units at locations like Matanzas, Kingsley Plantation, and Cumberland Island to help restore local shorelines.

UNF recently launched a new bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, developed with input from IERE’s Joint Faculty and Community Council. The program surpassed initial enrollment projections by reaching its target of 40 students in its first cohort; more than 200 applications have since been received from prospective students.
