Visit Sarasota County is promoting centennial celebrations across the region as part of its tourism strategy for 2026. The organization is using digital content, mobile passes, and media outreach to highlight neighborhoods, institutions, and landmarks that are reaching their 100-year milestones.

The bureau has published detailed guides on its website to help visitors and residents learn about countywide centennial events and the City of Venice’s 100th anniversary. These guides include information on special events, local history, and ways to support area businesses through two new mobile experiences.

In partnership with the City of Venice, Visit Sarasota County has launched the Venice Centennial Pass. This mobile pass acts as a guide to historic buildings, parks, and landmark sites in Venice. Another initiative, called the Circus Legacy Trail, will offer a curated list of tours and attractions connected to Sarasota’s circus heritage. This pass will be promoted through public relations efforts ahead of the 2027 anniversary marking John Ringling’s decision to move the winter quarters of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus to Sarasota. Both passes are free and do not require users to download an app.

The tourism bureau sees these centennial celebrations as a way to keep Florida’s Cultural Coast relevant within national commemorations such as America’s 250th Anniversary.

“For tourism, centennials provide an invitation for visitors to be a meaningful, momentary part of our destination’s history – but for residents, they hold a more profound meaning in reminding us why we continue to love where we live,” said Erin Duggan, President and CEO of Visit Sarasota County. “As we welcome 2026, we encourage you to embrace rediscovery as a hometown tourist yourself and connect with our shared history while supporting institutions that have drafted our reputation with visitors near and far and defined our quality of life for decades.”

Venice began its official centennial programming in 2025 with events scheduled through 2027. In 2026 alone, activities include unveiling a bronze statue honoring city planner John Nolen on February 18; hosting a year-long exhibition at the Venice Museum; organizing a community block party in March; and holding special Independence Day weekend celebrations.

Other cultural organizations also celebrating their centennials in 2026 include the Sarasota Opera House—which plans an open house event in April followed by a concert gala—and Art Center Sarasota, which will expand exhibitions and educational programs during its milestone season.

Additional notable locations such as St. Armands Circle and the original Sarasota High School building (now home to the Sarasota Art Museum) are also being recognized for their contributions over the past century.

Residents can follow Visit Sarasota County’s social media channels for updates on centennial activities throughout the year. More information about events and planning resources is available at https://www.visitsarasota.com/blog/sarasota-countys-centennial-celebrations.
